Landscape Photos of Utah

Utah scenery is some of the finest to be seen anywhere in the world. I say this after having visited nearly 30 countries around the world, all reknowned for their natural beauty. In the US, we preserve natural beauty by designating the most beautiful of these places as national parks. And in the US, after Alaska, Utah has the highest number of national parks. On a land-area basis, Utah wins hands down. Even many of Utah's state parks are strikingly scenic.

On this site, there are photos of The Wave in Coyote Buttes, an area that is becoming increasingly famous for its uniquely amazing sandstone formations. Amazing and unique because they have a beautiful combination of shapes, textures, and colors. The Wave is located in Coyote Buttes North. It has no set hiking trail. Hikers can wander throughout this area and discover its beauty to their heart's content. However, Coyote Buttes is rigorously controlled by the Bureau of Land Management, which issues 10 permits per day by advanced reservation. These reservations are made up to 6 months in advance and the openings are taken almost as quickly as they become available. The BLM issues an additional 10 permits one-day in advance by a lottery system for those that apply at the BLM office.

This site also has photos of Buckskin Gulch, also accessible from Coyote Buttes North. Buckskin Gulch has the distinction of being the longest slot canyon in the world. For those unfamiliar with slot canyons, imagine walking between tall walls merely feet apart, with these walls being beautifully colored jagged and textured sandstone. In the case of Buckskin Gulch, these walls sometimes are so close together that hikers must pass through side-stepping. This is not a place for the claustrophobic. Although not generally dangerous, Buckskin Gulch, like many slot canyons, is susceptible to flash floods. Hikers should be sure there hasn't been rain anywhere within about 30 miles before heading into the gulch.

This site also has photos of Zion National Park - the author's personal favorite of all US national parks, as well as Bryce Canyon National Park and Snow Canyon State Park.
